Registry-Style Weddings in Newcastle & the Hunter Valley
Legals only. Paperwork sorted. Married in 10 minutes flat.
Just want to be married, without the whole production? Easy.
I'm Monty King, a Commonwealth-registered marriage celebrant since 2015 and the 2025 ABIA NSW Celebrant of the Year.
I'll handle every bit of the legal side, meet you wherever suits within about an hour of Newcastle, and have you officially hitched before your coffee gets cold. No trip to a Sydney registry office required.
Legals-only weddings from $660, Monday to Thursday.
What is a registry-style or legals-only wedding?
A registry-style wedding, also called a legals-only wedding, is the shortest ceremony that makes you legally married in Australia.
You, your partner, two witnesses and a registered celebrant.
I say the words the law requires, you say your legal vows, everyone signs the paperwork, and you're married. No speeches, no aisle, no fuss. It's the same legal marriage as a 150-guest vineyard wedding. Just without the 150 guests.
Who books a legals-only wedding?
Pretty much every kind of couple. Maybe:
Couples who just want to be married, and don't want the circus
Couples having a big celebration later, or overseas, who want the legal bit done at home first
Couples whose mate or family member is running the "real" ceremony. Your friend can't legally marry you, but I can sign you off quietly beforehand so your mate gets the spotlight on the day
Couples sorting out visas, paperwork or timing who need it official
Second-time-around couples who've done the big wedding before
Couples who'd rather spend the money on a house, a holiday or a very good lunch
Can you get married at a registry office in Newcastle?
Not at a government one. The NSW Registry of Births, Deaths & Marriages runs its wedding ceremonies in Sydney and Wollongong, not in Newcastle or the Hunter. A local courthouse won't marry you either. So you've got two options. Drive to Sydney on a weekday for a set-script ceremony in a government room, or have a registered celebrant come to you. Same legal marriage either way. One of them involves the M1 at peak hour.
HOW IT WORKS
1. Get in touch. Send me your preferred date and rough location. I'll confirm availability and price straight away.
2. Sign the Notice of Intended Marriage (NOIM). This is the legal form that starts it all. It has to be with me at least one month before your wedding (and no more than 18 months). We can sign it in person or over a video call, whatever's easier.
3. Get married. You, your partner, two witnesses aged 18 or over, and me. Bring as many guests as you like, or none at all. Five to ten minutes later, you're married.
4. I lodge everything. I register your marriage with NSW Births, Deaths & Marriages and order your official marriage certificate for you. That's the one you'll need for name changes, passports and the bank, and it's included in the price. (The certificate you sign on the day is lovely, but it's not the one the bank wants.)
WHAT DOES IT COST?
Monday to Thursday: from $660.
That covers:
All the legal paperwork, start to finish (NOIM, documents check, ceremony certificates, registration)
A short, warm, legal ceremony. Five to ten minutes. Your own vows and a ring exchange, if you want them
Me, turning up anywhere within about an hour of Newcastle
Any number of guests. Just your two witnesses or your whole family, your call
Lodging your marriage with NSW Births, Deaths & Marriages
Your official NSW marriage certificate, ordered for you. No extra forms, no extra fee
Not included: - Your two witnesses. Bring your own. If that's genuinely not possible, I can arrange witnesses for an additional fee.
Friday to Sunday: price on enquiry. Weekend dates are limited and priced depending on the date and how far out it is. Last-minute weekend dates sometimes go at the weekday price, so it's always worth asking.
Further than an hour from Newcastle? Get in touch and I'll quote it.
If you're starting to picture something bigger than the legal essentials, a ceremony that tells your story, have a look at the options below.
Where can we do it?
Anywhere within about an hour of Newcastle. That covers Lake Macquarie, Maitland, Port Stephens, Cessnock and the Hunter Valley vineyards. Your backyard. Your lounge room. A park, a beach, a lookout, the brewery where you had your first date. Some public parks and beaches need a council booking for a ceremony. I'll tell you which ones, so you don't get moved on mid-vow.
Legals-only, elopement or the full show?

Yes. It's exactly as legal as any other wedding in Australia. The law cares about the paperwork, the required words, two witnesses and a registered celebrant. It doesn't care about the size of the guest list.
-
No. The NSW Registry of Births, Deaths & Marriages doesn't hold wedding ceremonies in Newcastle or the Hunter Valley, and local courthouses don't marry couples. The closest government ceremony rooms are in Sydney and Wollongong. A registered celebrant can marry you locally, with the same legal result.
-
One month after your Notice of Intended Marriage (NOIM) is lodged with me. That's a legal minimum, not my rule. In some situations, like travel, work or medical reasons, a court-appointed prescribed authority can approve a shorter timeframe. If you're tight on time, tell me early and I'll talk you through it.
-
Photo ID, plus your birth certificate or passport (we sort this when you sign the NOIM). If either of you has been married before, you'll need your divorce certificate or the death certificate of your former spouse. On the day, you need two witnesses aged 18 or over.
-
Yes, two, and both must be at least 18. It's up to you to bring them: two mates, two parents, or two strangers you've bribed with lunch. If that's genuinely not possible, let me know and I can arrange witnesses for an additional fee.
-
Yes, and I do this a lot. Unless your friend is a registered celebrant, they can't legally marry you. I'll do a quick legals-only ceremony with you beforehand, usually a few days or weeks before the big day, so your friend can run the celebration and everyone gets the day they wanted.
-
Item descriAbsolutely. Plenty of couples get legally married at home and celebrate later, overseas or once the budget catches up. If you'd like me back for the big one, I'd love that too.ption
-
Yes. There are a few legal words you both have to say, and you're welcome to add your own vows and swap rings on top of that. If you want me to tell your story as well, that's a different kind of ceremony, and I'd love to do that too.
-
Five to ten minutes. Add a few minutes if you're doing your own vows and a ring exchange, and a few more for photos of everyone signing.
-
Yes, Commonwealth-registered since 2015, with 800+ ceremonies under the belt. All Australian marriage celebrants are listed on the Attorney-General's Department public register if you'd like to check.
